Why Women’s Voices Still Aren’t Being Heard — And How We Can Change That

In between Davina McCall and I, in the photo below, is Dr Nighat Arif, a GP, author and TV presenter, and when she posted on Instagram last week that no-one came to the signing of her new book, The Complete Guide To Family Health in her local bookstore, it was a painful reminder of another brilliant woman's voice being overlooked. This made me feel mad, not only because I adore Nighat and count her as a friend (I actually went to her launch party for this brilliant new book), but on a number of other levels...

For all the progress we’ve made, the visibility gap for women in leadership remains stubbornly wide. Women make up half the population, yet globally they receive just 26% of media coverage. In business, male CEOs still receive 70% more media attention than female CEOs, and men are four times more likely to be quoted as experts in UK media.

This isn’t because women lack the expertise, ambition, or even impact. It’s because the systems that amplify leadership – mostly in media, publishing, investment, and on digital platforms – have historically been built around male voices.

This means that it is almost FOUR times as hard for women to break through the noise and gain visibility in a very noisy and crowded landscape both in traditional media and on social media platforms, including LinkedIn. Yet here’s the truth I’ve learned from 25+ years inside the British media, including my 15 years as Editor‑in‑Chief of HELLO!:

Visibility isn’t luck. It’s a strategy.

And visibility is a leadership tool – it is how influence is built, opportunities are unlocked, communities rally and movements grow.

If we want more women leading businesses, shaping industries, and telling the stories that shift culture, we must start by raising their voices – intentionally, consistently, and unapologetically. And we must learn the skills to tell our stories with confidence and authenticity.

What impressed me the most about Dr Nighat's story on Instagram, was that she used the story of no-one coming to her event as a way to gain interest in her book. I've seen over 25,000 people engage with that post, reshare it, even offers from celebrities to host another book signing for her. It is a brilliant example of being confident enough to tell your story to create an emotional connection. She has turned no-one coming to a book signing into a marketing tool, without actually asking anyone to buy her book. This is connection. This is visibility.

Telling my story has evolved from personal branding to thought leadership – it's less about me, more about the ideas I share to support others.

Since I found the confidence to share my own story of burnout, midlife reinvention and the huge identity shift that went with it, I have built a community around me, written more books, discovered a far more purposeful way to live, and made all the money I need. It is more than I could have ever imagined.

So there is a cost to staying quiet. When women aren’t visible, several things happen:

• Their expertise is overlooked.

• Their businesses grow more slowly.

• Their stories go untold.

• Their impact is underestimated.

• Their confidence takes a hit.

• They lose out on additional revenue streams.

And, importantly, the next generation sees fewer examples of what’s possible.

Women cannot become what they rarely see.

Visibility and community: Dame Kelly Holmes was a speaker on a recent Reinvention Retreat and shared how some of the darkest days struggling with her mental health were when she learnt the most about what she was capable of. At the heart of our retreats is the power of owning your story and using it as your super power.

If all this is putting a little fire into your belly and you've been looking to raise your profile whether as an individual, a founder, a writer or a key company stakeholder, there is no time like now. We live in a digital world where real stories can be amplified in a heart beat and personality cuts through the noise. And the good news is that visibility a skill – and it can be learned.

This is exactly why I created Rosies Reinvention Retreats: to give women the tools, confidence, and clarity to step into their next chapter with power. And my next retreat is designed specifically to tackle the visibility imbalance.

I will be joined by Confidence Coach, Rosie Dalling, and Creator and Instagram Trainer, Andie McDowell, on Friday 17th April as we give you all of our tools to raise your voice, get visible and create a community you can monetise.
